To identify whether your PRS has locking tuners, look for a cap screw on the top of the tuner shaft. These cap screws tighten to “lock” the string in place on the shaft.
How to restring:
- Remove old strings.
- Turn the tuner buttons until the hole in the tuning peg is pointing at the string’s nut slot.
- Pull string through hole and over two fingers (or 1.5”) at the nut. (Actual slack is approximately 5/8” to 3/4")
- Turn the cap screw so that it is finger tight.
- You may use a coin to further tighten the cap screw if needed, but no more than 1/8th turn. Do not overtighten.
- Clip excess string.
- Turn the tuner buttons to bring the string up to pitch, making sure each new wind is under the previous string’s coil around the shaft.
Proceed with setting up your PRS, checking and setting relief, action, and intonation. Always thoroughly stretch new strings during setup to prevent tuning issues.
